Ok, so you got a fine. You're not alone, believe me. You've tried to read the letter, but it's not very clear how to pay... Let me clarify this.
You've probably received the fine more than 20 days after the offence took place, and you've struggled to pay, but it seems to be impossible. The reason why is that UK citizens, as well as citizens from any other country not legally established in Spain, can benefit from the 50% reduction in fine payment for about three months after the notification is sent. How is that possible? Because there is no way to confirm the notification date.
It is as easy as using the date when you receive the notification as the notification date on the website or paying by bank transfer. The Spanish traffic regulations give you 20 days to pay with a 50% reduction, but that 20-day window starts when the driver receives the notification letter.
UPDATE (August 2020): there are now two ways to pay a speeding fine in Spain: online or by bank transfer. If you wish to pay by bank transfer it is crucial that you quote the record number (expediente in Spanish) as the reason for the transfer.
I have paid 50€ according to the process but I have received the same payment order 2 months later again with a 50 € reduction !!! Something crazy in their system for foreigners , many of tourists never pay maybe the best way !
ReplyDeleteI just followed the DGT direct line instructions. I was passed over to an english operator immediately, I explained that I just received the notification and asked if I was eligible for the 50% early payment reduction, the operator confirmed and directed me to the internet reference in the top left box of the ticket. I paid online by VISA and was provided with a printable receipt.
